Jefferson City Art Club, which is in its 115th active year fostering art appreciation, meets from 5:30-7:30 p.m. the third Monday from September through May at 409 Ellis Blvd. in the community room. The next meeting is March 18 and professional artist Lynn Porter, who works in pencil and watercolor, will give a presentation titled “I, Lynn Garriott Porter: Tales of an Artist plus Art House Gallery – A Manager’s Perspective.” Hollis Taylor, professional artist and oil and watercolor painter, will give a presentation, “Pet Portraits,” at the club’s April 15 meeting. Jefferson City Art Club featured artists not only have a collection of their artwork showcased at www.jeffersoncityartclub-missouri.com, but they also have an exhibit of work at the Department of Motor Vehicles, 1617 Southridge, open from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday. Artist Lorraine McFarland will be the club’s featured artist from Feb. 18 through April 1, and yours truly, artist Jimmy Mustion, will be the featured artist from April 2-May 14. The Columbia Art League currently is hosting its annual food-themed show call “Gluttony” through Feb. 22 at its art gallery, 207 South Ninth St. by the Missouri Theatre in Columbia. The league’s “Truth(?)” exhibit is held Feb. 26-April 19. There are many faces to the truth, many disguises and veils. In this event the artists are asked “what is the truth to you?” There will be a reception from 6-8 p.m. March 8. The Columbia Art League art gallery is open from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 573-443-8838.
Capital Arts has many upcoming events, including its “Portraits” exhibit made up of people, pets and silhouettes remains open through Feb. 5. From Feb. 8-March 12, Capital Arts will host “The Show-Me Art” exhibit, which proposes that art “is in the eyes of the beholder.” A reception for this exhibit will be from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 24.
The annual Ruth Hogan Children’s Art Show, made up of artwork from local grade school students, will be on exhibit from March 16-26 at Capital Arts, 1203 Missouri Blvd. There is no reception for this event. The Jefferson City Art Club Adult Fine Arts exhibit is held from March 28-April 30, featuring work from formally trained artists, art instructors, art related business people and artists who make a percentage of their income from their art. The reception for this exhibit is from 4:30-8 p.m. April 12 in conjunction with the annual spring Art Around Town Gallery Crawl.
Experience an art project of your own at Capital Arts’ Imagination Station. For a $1 donation per person, learn to paint with watercolor, acrylics or on ceramics, or pick from many pre-arranged art projects in the fully-stocked art room. Documentary series host Rick Jey, also known as Jefferson City Art Club member Jerry Ricker, presents two shows featuring top regional, national and international artisans from all aspects of the arts. “Spotlight on the Arts” shares a 30-minute, in-depth interview with an artist, where “Mid-Missouri Art News” provides two 15-minute interviews with artists. Major Missouri and national artists coming up on Rick Jey’s programs include: Karen Glines speaking about Billyo O’Donnell and their compilation book, “Painting Missouri;” Dan Woodward and Civil War battles west of the Mississippi River; Dr. Joan Stack and President Bob Priddy of the Missouri State Historical Society; and Ben Lowder of Cherokee Street Gallery in St. Louis.
All shows are recorded at J.C.T.V. on Lincoln University’s campus and shown on CenturyLink and Mediacom, as well as YouTube.
Learn to paint two different paintings with acrylics by watching artist Larry Carver’s new how-to video, available on Jefferson City Art Club’s Facebook page. He will walk viewers through two of his most requested paintings, ”Luna Landing” and “Tribute to Frazetta.”
Gary Cadwallader can instruct aspiring artists in learning to paint with watercolor. Just check out his how-to video on YouTube Videos by entering his name.
With many exciting classes scheduled this year at The Village Art Studio, 1502 E. High St. Suites 40 and 60 in Jefferson City, participants will be encouraged to sign up soon, particularly children wanting to attend their annual summer art camps. Reservations begin in February, with multiple camps scheduled for children ages six and older and one for middle and high school students called Crea-Teen.
Summer art camps will be held from June 3-7, 10-14 and 17-21, with the Crea-Teen camp held from June 24-28. Additional summer art camps are scheduled from July 8-12, 15-19 and 22-26. Call Ann DeRosier at 573-230-1414 for reservations and more information.
Upcoming Kids’ Art Workshops for children ages six and older are held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. March 2, April 6 and May 4. Sessions cost $35 and include supplies. The Spring Break Art Camp fro children ages six and older is $125 per session and held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m. March 25-29.
