Stories behind the storm

The road laid after a tornado hit Eldon and Jefferson City May 22 has been a challenging, often heartbreaking one.
Homes and businesses were destroyed or badly damaged. Weeks following, the Red Cross still had a shelter set up for those displaced by the storm. Others who still had their houses and apartments were without power for a few days.
Yet, clean-up began quickly as homeowners, workers, business owners and volunteers came together to pave a new path, a road to recovery and restoration. People from across the city, the state and beyond came together to aid those affected by the tornado, rebuilding Missouri’s state capital.
The countless donations, acts of kindness and fundraising efforts made have given hope to victims and proves that the city truly is #JCStrong.
Make sure to share your stories with the Missouri State Museum, which plans to open a temporary exhibit highlighting those stories, pictures and interviews before next spring. For more information, call museum director Tiffany Patterson at 573-522-6949 or email exhibits.statemuseum@dnr.mo.gov.
